Ethics

What is Ethics?

The Oxford Dictionary's definition states: 'moral principles that control or influence a person's behaviour.' This meant that I had to explore this further as I know that many people have different moral principles and people have many different types of behaviour, so what was right and what was wrong?

Well, the journey of researching Ethics so far has been eye opening and one that is constantly changing and developing in our world. I watched a very interesting Ted Talk by Shefali Roy which really cemented my thoughts on Ethics and made me question my own. I would highly recommend listening to it. There are many different theories on Ethics which can also make it confusing to understand however from my findings I take away that Ethics isn't any one thing. Its a series of morals, values and principles amongst other things that make up Ethics.

From a call with Adesola and re-reading pages 50 and 51 of the Handbook it started to click further. It is best not to think about it as just Ethics but rather that of two actions: 1. Ethical Considerations and 2. Ethical Procedures.

First you must understand, listen and consider what your actions may have on someone else(ethical consideration) and then when enough people have thought about one action and came to a similar conclusion there is usually a procedure put in place to make it more accepted by society(Ethical Procedure.)

I had never really thought about Ethics before in any aspect of my life and my next step in my research is to try and reflect on my life and answer more questions. What are my ethics? Where have they came from? Have they changed or developed? If so, when?

  1. Hi Paul,
Ethics is a really interesting point. Having started looking into it again on this course it has got me thinking about everyday life and if I am being ethical? Especially when I'm working with children I feel there is such a pressure to be doing the 'correct' things. This can be tricky when many people have different ethical values. What is the correct thing to do? It is a really interesting point that I am now constantly considering.
    Thank you!
    Alys
