Web 2.0

Hi everyone,

I have been doing some research into Web 2.0.

I have looked at many peoples blogs, the handbook and websites to gather as much information as I could before writing this blog, however, this topic is forever changing and there is lots more to explore.

What I have been learning from my studying so far is that everything is interlinked and that my research can sometimes go off into loads of tangents that I had no idea had anything to do with the topic I was searching. This way of learning is something that both excites me and give me slight anxiety; I like to to see an end result and a finish line at the end of the race however what I am coming to terms with now is that that mentality has to change.

Web 2.0 is basically using the web as in interactive tool and resource compared to Web 1.0 which was more of a reader and listener tool.

Upon re-reading this part of the handbook, it led me to oreilly.com, where Tim O'Reilly explains how the web has evolved and how websites now use it differently no with Web 2.0. A point that I found extremely interesting was that this blog was done in 2005 and it states:

'Wikipedia is already in the top 100 websites, and many think it will be in the top ten before long. This is a profound change in the dynamics of content creation!' (O'Reilly,2005)

Now in 2020, according to SimilarWeb.com, Wikipedia is in the top 10 websites, along with Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.  This shows that the way in which we use the web has changed and it has changed in a way that we all now know and love and that Web 2.0 is a huge part of our lives.

Furthermore, upon researching this, I also came across the term 'echo chamber' and decided to delve into this a little further. My findings have intrigued me and I am now going to do some further research on this and possibly another blog. (https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20180416-the-myth-of-the-online-echo-chamber)

To end my 2nd blog post, which is still a new tool of learning and communicating that feels slightly alien to me, I have learned that I use Web 2.0 a lot for my practice and that it is a daily tool.  I have also come to understand that it is a vital tool in this course and that it is a great way of communicating and expanding your knowledge although we may have to be more vigilant and investigate 'facts' before we claim them to be true ourselves.

  1. Hi Paul,
I have also been researching Web 2.0, as when the term first came up in the handbook I had no idea what it was! Having now started research into it I find it crazy that I had no idea of this term since I use it so frequently! I think Web 2.0 has become so popular because people have opinions and it is a way for them to express what they think and what they have learnt. We don't always take things at place value now a days, we question and ask why, and Web 2.0 gives us the facility to be curious and to have conversations or debates.
I'm looking forward to researching more into it.
    Thank you!

  2. Hi Alys,
Thank you for taking the time to read and respond to my blog!
I had a similar experience with Web 2.0, I could not believe that I had never heard of this term, yet had used it for years as both a tool for learning and a way of communicating with friends around the world.
It is also such a vital tool to have whilst doing this degree, without it, we would not be able to do this distance learning course! I can't wait to delve into it further and study some of the other points that are touched upon in the handbook such as; 'Does everyone have equal access to connectivity through the internet?' 'How has your professional field engaged with Web 2.0'

  3. Really enjoyed your post Paul and interesting to see a lot of the top 10 websites are Web 2.0 based. I guess that makes a lot of sense and it will be interesting to see how this will develop more in the future.
On a separate note - I can totally relate to the part in your blog where you mentioned how everything is interlinked and your research can go off on lots of tangents. Everything seems to be taking me much longer than I anticipated because of these tangents but its fascinating and I'm learning a lot more than I realised I would!

    1. Hi Jen,
Yes, I am interested to see what the future holds in regards to Web 2.0 too.
I am glad you are having a similar experience in regards to researching, I am enjoying gathering and absorbing as much information as possible and I am coming to terms with the fact that it is ok to cross over and investigate a different idea as there tends to be a link between it all.

  4. Hi Paul,

I have only just begun researching Web 2.0 so reading your blog was very helpful. In all honesty I had no idea what Web 2.0 was or what it meant.

It's really funny when you say "I like to to see an end result and a finish line at the end of the race however what I am coming to terms with now is that that mentality has to change"...I feel the same way. I love producing something and seeing the final outcome. But with this it's neverending! I suppose it is something we will have to get used to!

  5. Hi Bronte,

I was exactly the same, I had no idea what it was. I cannot believe how much I used this tool and used it for research and information without even knowing I was doing it.

Yes, I am now coming to terms with the fact that there is always more research to gather as information is constantly changing and updating because of Wed 2.0 and how quickly and widely accessible it is.

  6. Hi Paul, I'm starting Module 1 and have just started researching Web 2.0. I agree, it is such an enormous topic with so much information surrounding it, I feel I am going on tangents too, but then keep reminding myself that questions lead to more questions.

Looking forward to reading more of your blogs. Also thank you for all your tips in the Induction Call last week, it was much appreciated.
