Interviews and research

Yesterday I had my first interview!

I have collected some great data from my key texts so far however I had been lacking on data that linked movement of the body and mindfulness, so I decided to do an interview with a Yoga Teacher. It was a massive learning curve and upon listening back and transcribing it today, I still have much to learn on interview technique.

I cannot help but feel that my own bias transcended throughout the interview and that I continued to agree and say 'yeah' about a million times whilst my interviewee was speaking. This has been extremely frustrating today however it is a huge learning curve.  I plan on completing a further interview with another interviewee later next week and I will now be making an ethical consideration to listen more and talk less.

I am wondering if any Module 3's have had similar issues or is it just me and my big mouth?

  1. Hi Paul,
Congratulations on completing your first interview! I haven't done any of my own as interviews are not one of my data collection methods, however in terms of your frustration with unconscious bias coming through I don't think you should be hard on yourself, especially as it was your first interview so you are still trying to figure out the best approach to take. Maybe, although we are exploring within our inquiry, your interview technique in itself is a form of inquiry?

  2. Hi Paul,
I felt the same in my first interview. It's so much harder than I thought to not just say 'yeah' and agree! I think interview technique is something that comes with practice. But also maybe think about why you acted and spoke in that way, might be interesting to look at and analyse as well? Thanks! Alys xx

  3. Hi Paul, I found it so interesting reading this! We had a Skype the other day with Sam and module 2 and discussed interviews and how to go about them and your feedback from this blog is so telling! I can just image doing the same! So great you have been able to know this before officially doing your research!
